Week 4 Recap & Top Performers (2026)
RECAP AND SEASON MID-POINT | WRITTEN BY JAVIER GUZMAN
Week 4 is in the books, and we are officially at the mid-season point. District play has started for some teams, and this week and the following week, the rest of the teams will begin.
In the 6A classification, Laredo United South is off to its best start in years, as they just swept perennial district favorite Laredo Alexander and made a statement by winning 8-0 and 8-1. The Panthers will definitely be a team to watch in the playoffs, capable of making a deep run. Another 6A team to watch in Region IV is the La Joya Coyotes, who are also off to a strong start at 17-3. The Coyotes are led by a large senior class that is performing at a high level. Last but not least, don’t count out the PSJA Bears. Their schedule was loaded with top teams across Texas in tournament play. They have also been without their ace, Jesse Garza, who was a big part of the pitching staff during the Bears’ regional final run last year. It looks like the Bears are playing consistent baseball right now heading into district play, and if Garza returns, you may see them make another deep playoff run.
In the 5A classification, which may be the deepest pool of talented teams in years, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial, Corpus Christi Ray, Gregory-Portland, and Flour Bluff lead the way with a strong start for the Coastal Bend region. Victoria East, just a bit east of the Coastal Bend, is one of those teams that could easily make a deep playoff run, but they play in a talented Region III, which will be tough. The Valley is deep with quality teams such as Mission Sharyland, Sharyland Pioneer, Weslaco East, La Joya Palmview, Rio Grande City, Brownsville Rivera, and PSJA North. Don’t be surprised if one of these teams shows up in the Final Four when it’s all said and done. The “Big 12” (District 29-5A) is once again going to go down to the wire—sit back and enjoy the madness.
The 4A classification is living up to expectations, as the usual teams such as Calallen, Sinton, and Tuloso-Midway lead the way. Calallen is hitting its stride, Sinton will be a tough out come playoff time, and Tuloso-Midway is always solid. It’s state or bust for the Wildcats, and I do believe they will be in Round Rock when it’s all said and done.
In the 3A ranks, this season seems more open than in previous years. Yes, the London Pirates can repeat and certainly can be in Round Rock again as they try to find consistency heading into district play. The Pirates no doubt have the team, and with their multi-sport athletes back from a state appearance in basketball, they now look to get hot at the right time. Looming in the background will be the Falfurrias Jerseys and Goliad Tigers in 3A Division I, while Orange Grove and Hebbronville try to get back to the regional final in 3A Division II. Don’t count out Bishop either—they played three tough tournaments and competed well. They have a long history of playoff runs, so it will be no surprise if they do it again. Raymondville and Santa Gertrudis are dark horse teams as well. The “Little Big 12” (District 30-3A) will be another dogfight, as Bishop, London, and Orange Grove are favorites, but Santa Gertrudis, Banquete, and San Diego will put up a fight.
In the 2A classification, Region IV has been tough, with teams like Shiner, Johnson City, Weimar, and D’Hanis consistently making appearances at the state tournament. Refugio, Agua Dulce, Port Aransas, and Kenedy look to make some noise once again. Don’t count out Freer or Riviera, which are mainstays in the playoffs year after year.

College Spotlight - Rocco Garza Gongora, UT-Rio Grande Valley
Branching out to Laredo, we focus on Rocco Garza Gongora, a redshirt junior at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. Shoutout to the Laredo Times for highlighting him first, and putting him on our radar. Gongora is a native of Laredo, Texas, and a graduate of Laredo Alexander High School. He is in his first season with the Vaqueros, and has contributed immediately at the plate while playing the outfield.
Against New Orleans, Gongora was fantastic at the plate, going 6-for-12 and hitting a homer. That's great at any level of play. He is hitting .263 on the season and has 21 hits, 8 RBI, and 6 doubles. There are guys like this all over the country, so if you know any college guys that have a great week, let us know! We want to spotlight as much as possible.Rocco Garza Gongora had a great weekend at the plate against New Orleans, batting .500
Pro Spotlight - BLAKE MITCHELL, KANSAS CITY ROYALS CATCHER
Blake Mitchell, the Sinton HS grad, and 2023 Kansas City 1st Round Draft Pick, has gotten some good reps with the big league club during 2026 spring training. Now playing with the minor league squads, Mitchell seems to be healthy and thriving as the season opener nears. This is good after he missed the first chunk of the 2025 season due to hamate surgery that sidelined him. After a strong showing at the Arizona Fall League, things are looking to be back on track for Blake. Our guess is that he starts the season in Double-A Northwest Arkansas, but a generous guess would have him starting in Triple-A Omaha.
Hopefully we get to see Blake here in Corpus at Whataburger Field this season!
Blake Mitchell will likely start the season in DoublE-A after some reps with the big league club in spring training.
