Week 6 Recap & Top Performers (2026)
TEAMS HAVE REALLY SEPARATED THEMSELVES FROM THE FIELD
It always amazes me just how quickly the high school season comes and goes. We have just under a month left of the regular season, and lots of teams have really started to separate themselves from the field.
I got to check out two really solid games last week. The first being Gregory-Portland vs. Ray at Whataburger Field. This was my first true look at both teams, and they didn't disappoint. A big time RBI double by Josh Hernandez tied the game at 5-5 late, which set the stage for Freshman Izaiah Solis to hit a walk-off single to left field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th. A gritty win for Ray who battled back from being down early.
Second, I found myself out at Tuloso-Midway for the first matchup between our 4A-Top 10 teams, and rivals, Calallen and TM. Collier Carroll was masterful on the mound with 14 k's on the night. Calallen scored early and often, winning by an 8-0 score. Reese Rusher hit his first homer of the season, and the Wildcat offense did it's usual damage. TM's Carlos Trevino was on the mound, but it's never easy facing a lineup that can hit nearly anybody. The two will square off again at the end of the regular season before they gear up for a playoff run.
In other news, Agua Dulce jumped Refugio in the 5-spot in our power rankings. Both Large school rankings remained the same, with those top teams really separating themselves from the others locally. As we've said before the RGV and Laredo are deep this year, so expect them to give our Corpus-area teams some challenges come playoff time.
Orange Grove and Alice are both looking to get out of a rut and find their rhythm again, and Flour Bluff had a solid week going 3-0. Best time of the year!

Coastal Bend Large School With no change. Regugio and Agua Dulce switch. Laredo & RGV No change.
College Spotlight - JJ Bush, Southeastern Oklahoma University (d2)
No stranger to the spotlight is JJ Bush! Bush is having a heck of a season up in Oklahoma at Southeastern OK. To date, JJ is hitting a fantastic .353 with 12 HR's, 11 2B's, 29 BB's, 35 RBI, 38 RS, and 42 hits on the season. Those are some really impressive numbers for the Corpus Christi native, and former Islander.
With just under one more month of regular season play left, Bush will still have plenty of baseball left to add to these totals. Again, this is some really impressive stuff at any level of play. Always love to see our local guys succeeding at the next level.

Pro Spotlight - Marco Raya, Minnesota Twins RHP (AAA)
The spotlight falls on Laredo native, and Minnesota Twins RHP, Marco Raya. Raya was added to the Minnesota 40-man roster in 2024, which is a great sign for any player. It's a sign of commitment from the club, and also indicates that you are right on the doorstep of being called up to the show. Raya has climbed the ranks through the last 4-5 years, which led to him getting some big league innings over spring training this year.
The Twins also had a number of pitching injuries prior to the start of the season, which had me thinking that he had a really good opportunity to make the club out of ST this year. However, he is starting in St. Paul with the Triple-A team. Despite this, I really think that we will see him in the show this year. His stuff is as good as ever, and Minnesota is a good place to be for a young pitcher right now.
